UC Irvine Celebrates Guggenheim Fellowship Awards for Gina Osterloh and Lorraine O'Grady
The Claire Trevor School of the Arts is proud to share that UC Irvine Department of Art graduate alumna Gina Osterloh, M.F.A. ’07, and former faculty member Lorraine O'Grady have been honored with prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation selected 188 distinguished artists, scholars, and cultural visionaries from nearly 3,000 applicants for the 2024 class of Fellows.
Gina Osterloh, an artist and Associate Professor of Art at The Ohio State University, is renowned for her work in photography, collage, performance, text, and sculpture. Her innovative photo tableaux and other artistic endeavors challenge assumptions about identity and perception. Osterloh's notable exhibitions include "Mirror Shadow Shape" at the Columbus Museum of Art and "Demilitarized Zone / Image Without Weapon" at MOCA Detroit.
Lorraine O'Grady, a conceptual multidisciplinary artist and former UCI faculty member (2000-15), continues to push the boundaries of performative art with her new project, reviving an old persona.
The Guggenheim Fellowship, now in its 99th year, is awarded annually by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. These fellowships provide recipients with monetary stipends to support their independent work, allowing them to pursue their creative and scholarly endeavors under the freest possible conditions. Since its establishment in 1925, the Foundation has granted over $400 million in fellowships to more than 19,000 individuals, fostering significant contributions across 52 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields.
